in 1979, emma dorgu decided it was time to act. he�d torn up the lagos live scene with the thermometers and conquered the airwaves with the single, �world people�. but there were injustices afoot, not just in nigeria, but in south africa and zimbabwe and across the continent as well, and he felt that something needed to be done. roverman was his politicized call to action. blackman akeeb kareem lent him the instruments and let him rehearse in his sitting room. dorgu sets his stall out early in the reggae-tinged �free my people� calling for freedom for south africa, freedom for zimbabwe, indeed, freedom for all. thankfully political injustice hadn�t rid emma completely of his urge to get on down. the new york ghetto funk of �roverman� and �loving� and the straighthead boogie of �afro fever� leaven the message with a funky beat and an irresistible pull towards the dancefloor. on roverman emma dorgu has achieved that that rarest of beats, an album that challenges your mind while it speaks to your feet. protest music has never sounded so funky.

it�s hard to get a handle on nigerian musicians nash dodoo, charlie cuul and jonas caulley. in 1980 they released an album of face-melting gospel boogie as the bml chapels. and in the same year, calling themselves the beta yama group, they put out free love, a belated love letter to san francisco�s summer of love and an album altogether focused on more worldly concerns. free love is a small slice of haight-ashbury transported to the polygram studios in lagos. �te revoir� is mamas and papas jamming with sergeant pepper�s beatles. �free love� offers a respectful nod towards je t�aime-era serge gainsbourg. sure, �revolution� gets hard and funky and �rain� flirts briefly with a calypso reggae sound, but the majority of the album is cheesecloth and flowers in your hair. insanely rare � and worth buying for the freaky cover art alone � free love is a funky, reverb heavy call for love, peace and sweet, sweet loving. what more could you want from an album?

stepback records launch with the first new thinktank material in many years!! danger at 300 fathoms ep combines styles from many genres, electro, house, techno, reggae, electronica all neatly produced and packaged to build an excellent first release for stepback records. its no surprise as thinktank aka colvin cruickshank has a strong background in writing and producing top quality music. his band snide rhythms has a cult following and his music with thinktank reveals the breath and diversity of colvins talents as a writer and producer. a side algae rhythms kicks off the ep. its a house focused club record with a quirkyness that defines thinktanks sound. meanwhile, w sludge on b1 packs more of a punch with its heavier kick drum, snares and a much more skanky feel. we round off with l ahrax point an uncomprimising club track. its badass electro but again with a deep twist that intrigues the listener and leaves you wanting to listen again and again.

whether it is hip hop,techno, electro boogie, new beat, italo, jungle, reggae, house or chill out. though, all those different sounds and styles do not tear this album apart. it s a bit of a miracle that it feels so flawless for what happens between the appetizing -level one- and the final track -the last march-.

it really feels like we (aka mad mats & tooli) have been around way longer than 5 1/2 years with local talk, but it s really true what they say, time flies when you re having fun! from what started as a somewhat simple and almost primitive urge to create a small house imprint has now grown into a much bigger affair. we really tried hard to keep the label from getting stuck in any genre (remember 90s house?) and to always keep the local talk relevant, curious, diverse and with a healthy dose of underground mentality. from our very first release with bassfort s excellent moon shadow in the summer of 2011, we had a crystal clear vision of what local talk should represent... house music in any way, shape or form! over the years we released soulful, disco, jack, afro, vocal, deep, jazz, tech, latin, old school, acid, uk, berlin, new jersey, detroit and of course chicago inspired house music. if it made us bump...we put it out! this brings us up to today and about +80 releases later. we thought about how we best could sum up these first 5 1/2 years and immediately the image of blaze s classic album 25 years later popped up. besides the fact that it s an amazing album cover it also a good representation when different musical genres fuse together. it s not strictly a house album but just as well a r&b, reggae and soul album. this fusion and variation of house sounds is something that we ve tried to capture on our 5 1/2 years later compilation, split into two parts. on part 1 you ll find a dark bassline driven house jam from art of tones (check the mad sax!), a proper deep journey jam from nyc s dj spinna, a blaze homage with that classic new jersey sound from sean mccabe, and a bumpy world/jazz inspired cut straight outta brescia from wonder kid corrado bucci. all in all we think we got most angles covered and hopefully this album will make you spread that chalk on the dance floor and get down...local talk style!

as we roll into a brand new year bass culture keeps the pressure high with a funk-filled new three-track ep from one of germany�s finest, sebo k. the berliner has been entrenched in his city�s vibrant scene since the nineties, when he was playing breakbeat and jungle. in fact, there�s a nod towards his early days on the �brock wild� ep, along with some sultry funk. head of his own label, scenario, and curator of parties under the same name, sebo k has also produced music for a long list of some of the world�s most influential underground labels and now he steps up to bass culture with this sleek collection. the title track is a steady roller with hefty bass rumbling deep below sturdy beats. the groove is funky and low slung, swirling pads mesmerise you as soulful female vocals raise your vibration. the track is punctuated by an iconic sample of uk reggae star top cat, which was used in several early jungle tracks in the mid-nineties and now again on sebo�s killer track.flip the record over for side b, which kicks off with �aftershock�, another sweet groove with jazzy hues, more punchy percussion and a warm, simmering undercurrent. as the track evolves, techy notes are added to its potent mix and we get a wonderful mix of traditional sounds and more futuristic effects. last but not least is �foliage patterns�, a sensual cut straight out of the us school of deep house. this is one that will be spun by all the deep house masters no doubt, with all the elements you need to inject some bounce into the dance floor yet still touch its soul. as we said, sebo k is one of germany�s finest, a versatile producer and dj who demonstrates exactly why he remains one of the nation�s most consistent and respected artists. make sure you add the �brock wild� ep to your collection, it�s a must!

late last year music for dreams released the digital album -debut- by bongo entp. this passion project from veteran studio session player jacob andersen brought us an unexpectedly fresh take on south american music traditions. on this new vinyl release, the project is both revisited and expanded upon. cherry picking some of the grooviest cuts from the album for this ep, we also get remix treatments from well sourced collaborators selvagem & carrot green. both hailing from brazil, these producers certainly know how to work latin percussion on a dancefloor. taking on the dreamy cover version of henri mancini�s classic -lujón- (original included too), carrot green ups the tempo and wrangles the elements of the original into something completely different. adding a house kick and dark acid undertones, he takes you on a wet trip with lots of twists and turns. the production duo of selvagem manage something similar with one of the looser bongo entp. jams. the original -foto feita do aviaõ is a jazzy scat sinaalong tune. in selvagem�s hands, it turns into an epic cosmic disco groover, locked into place by a muscular baseline. the vocal chants of the original are here, but used in a lower key and more sparingly to punctuate the bounce of the rhythm. the vinyl includes two other album highlights - the cafe del mar classic -el rey de pollo- , a santana-style chill-out affair featuring mikkel nordsø of bombay hotel fame and finally the moody -spanish winter- with its robotic reggae-like groove and syrup-thick synthesizers bubbling in a bittersweet fashion. a superb package.

tommy mccook to be leader of the skatalites in the early 1960s, he went on to become the chief exponent of rock steady as leader of the supersonics house band at treasure isle. mccook remained a key session player throughout the reggae era, and during the roots reggae heyday of the mid-1970s, his expressive melodies found particularly strong outlet, especially on the music he created for grassroots producer bunny �striker� lee as a member of the aggrovators, the studio outfit lee hand-picked from the cream of jamaica�s musical crop. when enhanced by the adventurous mixing experiments of king tubby, the engineer that turned dub into an art form, instrumental aggrovators music became positively ethereal, yielding an exceptional listening experience. on king tubby meets the aggrovators at dub station, tommy mccook blows mean sax and flute over dubs of outstanding tracks by johnny clarke, cornell campbell, linval thompson, delroy wilson, and others greats. first issued on third world in 1976, this vinyl reissue comes complete with four thematic bonus tracks, and the whole disc makes for essential listening. reissued on lp and cd with bonus tracks!

the visionary musician and record producer augustus pablo made some of the most unique and individual recordings in the history of reggae. as with his friend and mentor, jackie mittoo, the man born horace swaby was of mixed indian and african heritage, and although his middleclass background might have pointed him in a very different direction, the lure of jamaica�s sound system culture captured him at a young age, particularly after debilitating health problems saw him drop out of school. he began recording as a session keyboardist as the 60s gave way to the 70s, but everything changed when a schoolfriend introduced him to the melodica, a small plastic keyboard operated by a mouthpiece, which he used on seminal recordings for producer herman chin-loy, credited to augustus pablo on release. during the early 1970s, pablo crafted melodica instrumentals for all of the leading reggae producers, scoring �best instrumental� for �java� in 1973, and launching the rockers label to showcase self-produced work at the same time. this multifaceted compilation, first issued on bunny lee�s attack label in 2005, compiles memorable melodica interpretations of some of lee�s greatest productions, recorded over dub cuts of immortal numbers such as cornell campbell�s �queen of the minstrel� and john holt�s �my desire.� reissued on lp and cd with bonus tracks!

atr is a one of a kind reggae collective based in parkside brooklyn. founded by scrillamatic and kg, at their core they are just group of friends who hang out in the park and sing, all day. the routine is simple, they meet up at their favorite hangout spot on the side of a lake, play beats off of a beat up but loud stereo, and belt out lyrics out into the air. sometimes a crowd gathers but it�s usually just a few like minded artists sharing their love for music. natives of the west indies, but coming of age in brooklyn, they have a very unique perspective on life and the world we live in. with subject matters varying from traditional roots medleys, smoked out ganja anthems to gangsta badman chants to heartfelt soulful ballads telling tales of the ghetto and more, they have a lot to say.

brand new, rambunctious, rootsy, spiritual brass-band music from lagos, with singing, drums and home-made percussion. obadikah is a group of old friends who play together in the cherubim & seraphim and baptist churches of the ikeja and isale eko districts. a couple of them were founder-members of the eko brass band, they�ve played with pretty much all the key nigerian reggae artists. the tunes are mostly traditional yoruban melodies, often sung at bed-time. the songs are mostly original, sung in yoruba (though jomido is an egun song from the badagry area of lagos state).

alma vox is an eccentric parisian combo, they gave us this little 7-inch without much explanation, and we were instantly drawn by its hazy poetical pop appeal. the a side covers the famous french 80 s song �toi mon toit , by elli medeiros, adding a sensual neurasthenic disco twist, yet danceable and fun. theme ii on the b-side, has a mid-tempo reggae/funk mood combined with some ecstatic emotional chords. perfect for a cliché-freemediterranean sunset, this tune has already worked wonders on various discerning dance floors. both tracks have been mixed by i:cube, who added his unique sound to great effect.
